Now that 2011 is over, we can take a look back at the new words that were introduced to the various English dictionaries. The Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary has come into the 21st century with tweet and social media. Other technology words include crowdsourcing and m-commerce. Pop culture is always a good source for new vocabulary. From television we get bromance and cougar. Sports has given us its fair share of references with duathlon and parkour.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary has added over 400 new words. Like the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, many of the words are technology and social-media related, such as retweet, woot, noob, cyberbullying and sexting. From fashion we have jeggings and mankini.

Fête des Lumières

Every year on December 8th, the city of Lyon becomes a sparkling jewel as houses, businesses and apartment buildings are lit by millions of small votive candles on all their windowsills. The Fête des Lumières originated as a celebration of Mary, Jesus's mother. But over time, it has become for many a simple celebration of light and its beauty.

It's a fun way to really get into the Christmas spirit, with lights, candles, hot chestnuts and hot, spiced wine to drink in Lyon as well as in many of the little towns and villages surrounding the city. This year the celebration starts on December 8th and continues through the weekend.

There is no way to describe in words Lyon's fairy-like quality during the festival, so I wanted to share it with a photo-tour.

Many of the little squares (les places) and churches become canvases for light displays. Some tell stories and others are more abstract. All the shows run idependently from one another throughout the festival. Each light show runs on a continuous loop, with a soundtrack. Some even include narration. Festival-goers are able to then vote online for the 'Best of Festival' award.

Walking along the streets on la presqu'île (presque= almost, île= island, so presqu'ile means 'almost-island', or, peninsula) there are lights of all kinds hung from almost anything, like this:

Learn a foreign language!

"What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages? Bi-lingual. What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages? Tri-lingual. What do you call someone who only speaks one language? American."

Americans are often criticized by people in other countries because to be honest, we aren't all that great at learning foreign languages. But, to be fair, people usually rank their activities in priority order, giving greater weight to those things we feel we 'need' to do. In general, Americans don't feel a strong need to learn another language. Why?

The main reason is due to geography. Canada is mostly English-speaking, and Spanish, remains largely restricted to regions near the Mexican border (which is changing rapidly). The other reason is that English is quickly becoming the global language of science, commerce, and diplomacy (a title that used to be held by French). But it's different in other parts of the world. For example, here in France, my son is a Junior in high school. He started English classes, along with German, in 6th grade. He switched to Spanish in 8th grade. Most student learn at least 2 foreign languages (one of which is English), and it's not uncommon for students to pick up a third and sometimes even a fourth foreign language. Granted, Europe has many language zones packed into a relatively small space, so much of the language learning is done out of necessity. But we can learn an important lesson from the European language-learning model: if they can routinely learn additional languages, so can you!

As America becomes less isolated through travel and the Internet, geography will be less and less important. The sooner we understand that, the better. End result? We will see more and more of people learning new languages. What do you think about Americans and foreign languages? À l’heure des mails et des SMS, la carte postale a toujours le mêmesuccès en France ! Il s’en vend 332 millions chaque année et la plupart deces cartes sont envoyées pendant l’été.

Choisie avec attention en fonctiondu destinataire, la carte postale a toujours la cote dans l’Hexagone. Ce petitbout de carton de 165 centimètres rassure les parents, fait plaisir aux personnesâgées, fait rêver les copines et rigoler les copains…

Au dos, les mots sont toujours lesmêmes : « Une petite pensée de ……où nous passons nos vacances »,« Gros bisous de ….. où nous sommes pour une petite semaine »,« Ici, tout se passe bien, le soleil brille et la mer estchaude … ».

Pour information, sachez qu’on nepeut pas écrire tout ce qu’on veut sur une carte postale. Vous risquez jusqu’à1500 euros d’amende pour une injure par exemple.

Speaking English makes you more likely to blame others

I was reading an article the other day about Anglophones and found out something interesting. If my friend Liz is at my house and stands on my coffee table and it breaks (I have no idea what she's doing up there- she'd never actually stand on a coffee table), if someone asks me what happened, I, as an English speaker am likely to say, "Liz broke the table," even if it was an accident.

Scientists have done studies that determine that speakers in Spain or Japan would probably simply say, "It broke." At Stanford University, scientists showed videos of two people breaking eggs, spilling drinks and popping balloons - both intentionally and accidentally. The viewers, who were speakers of English, Japanese and Spanish, were later given a memory test in which they were asked to describe the events. Surprisingly, the English speakers remembered equally the accidental and intentional events. However, while the Japanese and Spanish speakers remembered the intentional events as well as the English speakers, they had a significantly more difficult time remembering the accidents! Why? Because the English speakers assigned blame to the person who popped the balloon, spilled the drink or broke the egg, no matter if it was an accident or not. This helped them to encode the incident in their mind. So is this a cultural difference or a linguistic difference? One more study points more toward the linguistic...

Remember the Super Bowl halftime show when Janet Jackson had her 'wardrobe malfunction', showing viewers more of her than she intended? Two groups of English speakers were shown the video of the incident and then given a written report of the incident and told to come up with a suitable punishment. The reports were worded slightly differently: in one, the end said 'the costume ripped' and in the other 'Justin Timberlake ripped the costume'. Even though the entire group had watched the same video, those who got the report that said 'the costume ripped' determined a punishment only half of that of the other group (who had a person to blame)!

Moral of the story? For English speakers, there has to be a scapegoat - someone to blame.

Petites pensées de la France en vacances …

Français ou anglais ?
Savez-vous qu’en visitant la France, les Anglophones ne se sentiront pas dépaysés avec le nom de certains villages au nom bien anglais ! Quelques exemples :

Brain : situé en Bourgogne, Brain compte seulement 26 habitants : les grands cerveaux sont rares !

Busy : petite commune du Doubs, Busy compte juste 530 habitants… : pas vraiment animé comme le laisse entendre le nom de ce village.

Condom : située dans le Gers, cette commune fait depuis longtemps sourire les Anglophones qui la visitent. Le maire de cette commune ne veut cependant pas assimiler sa commune aux préservatifs. En mars dernier, il a fait interdire la vente de préservatifs sous la marque « The original condom from Condom, France », refusant que le nom de sa commune soit utilisé à des fins commerciales. Les deux aristocrates français qui avaient lancé cette marque de préservatifs de luxe sur le marché américain ont dû en arrêter la fabrication. Pour la petite histoire, le siège de la société était basé à Condom, mais les préservatifs étaient fabriqués en Malaysie !

Cuts : commune de l’Oise, de 1 000 habitants…peu d’habitants pour un village au nom si court !

Hunting : situé près des frontières du Luxembourg et de l’Allemagne…D’après ce que l’on sait, les habitants de ce village ne pratiquent pas la chasse plus qu’ailleurs en France.

Noisy : c’est en fait le nom de six communes de France. Dans certains cas, ce sont des communes très tranquilles. D’autres au contraire, comme Noisy-le-Sec, près de Paris, sont entourées d’autoroutes… vraiment noisy !

Silly : plusieurs villages de France commencent par Silly : Silly-sur-Nied près de Metz, Silly-Tillard et Silly-le-long, dans l’Oise. Leurs habitants ne sont pourtant pas plus stupides que les autres !

4 fun facts about the 4th of July!

To most Americans, the Fourth of July is probably the most patriotic event of the year. Time to get out flags, fireworks, candy, and any kind of object that makes noise, because it’s time to
P-A-R-T-Y! And while we’re at it, don’t forget to stop and watch the parade go by! There will be dancers, bands from the various high schools in the area, and, depending on the size of the city, anything ranging from the prize sheep of the local town fair to a VIP.

Did you know?

- The 4th of July originates from the 4th of July 1776, when the Declaration of Independence from the British was signed!
- The citizens of Greeley, Colorado, celebrate with the nation’s largest rodeo, the ‘Greeley Stampede’. It attracts 400 000 visitors each year!
- Although there is no traditional meal on the Fourth of July, it isn’t uncommon to see families get together for a barbecue outside, eating hamburgers and hot dogs, chicken, ribs, garden salads, potato salad, chips and watermelon.
- 11 cities in the States are called ‘Independence’ in memory of the famous day of Independence.

Music & language

The link between music and language has been well-established. Speakers of tonal languages are much more likely to have perfect pitch, for example.

But let's look at it from a different angle, or tune, if you will. How can music be used to help learn a language? Listening to music in your target language helps build your vocabulary, but singing along also helps you match your pronunciation, intonation and speech rhythm to that of the native speaker (or singer, as the case is here). Also, a recent study found that singing words, rather than speaking them, improves the listener's ability to distinguish the end of one word from the beginning of the next. (Anyone who has ever heard a string of unending French can identify with this challenge!)

NPR's World Music is a good place to start discovering music in your target language. (This is where I first heard Malian singer Rokaya Traoré, one of my current favorites.)

Thanks to the Matador Network, I've also been listening to Souad Massi, an Algerian woman who sings in her native Arabic, as well as French and Spanish.

Shifting musical style gears, but staying within the French language, Benjamin Biolay is offering a free download of his song 'La Superbe' until October 19th. Sounds like a good (free!) place to start to me.

French expressions

Voici quelques expressions utilisées par les ados français. Difficile à comprendre pour les non initiés, ce petit glossaire peut vous aider à décoder ce langage ado.

- Espèce de bouffon ! Peut se dire plus ou moins méchamment pour dire de quelqu’un qu’il est stupide !

- Grave : peut signifier bête ou nul ou pour insister, comme vraiment.

- Kiffer : adorer, aimer. Ainsi, si vous entendez un ado dire : « Elle je la kiffe grave ! » Cela veut dire qu’il l’aime beaucoup !

- Mater : regarder.

D’autres expressions sont très employées comme :

- C’est chaud ! Pour dire que la situation est difficile ou qu’elle pose problème.

- C’est mortel ! Pour dire que quelque chose est génial !

- C’est ouf ! Le verlan est une vielle tradition qui consiste à inverser les syllabes d’un mot généralement court. Ainsi une femme est devenue une « meuf ». Quelque chose qui est relou est lourd et quelque chose de chelou est louche, donc bizarre. Enfin, on dit faire la teuf pour faire la fête et si vous êtes vénère, vous êtes donc énervé.

- C’est cool ! Le dernier truc « fashion », c’est de prononcer les « i » et les « y » à l’anglaise, c’est à dire « aille ».
Exemple : « pas de soucis » se dit « no soussaille ! ». Avec un peu de pratique, vous pouvez y arriver.

- C’est « trop » à la place de « très » est très usité comme c’est trop bien ! Il est trop génial !

Autre tendance du langage jeune, l’emploi du « de chez ». Ainsi on dira «génial de chez génial »

Enfin, la tendance est aussi à l’économie, ainsi on ne dit pas c’est spécial mais « c’est spé »

Truly French!

Bêbête, fofolle ou pépère ? Dans le registre familier, la langue française utilise beaucoup de mots qui sont formés à partir du redoublement de la première syllabe, soit à partir d’un mot existant pour former un autre mot, soit sans origine étymologique particulière. Amusez-vous à les prononcer, ces mots font en général sourire.

En voici quelques-uns :

- Être pépère : aimer sa tranquillité.

- Être bêbête : être un peu stupide.

- Être gnangnan : être niais et stupide.

- Être fofolle : être un peu folle (pour une idée ou une personne).

- Être plan-plan : être trop tranquille.

- Être baba : être très admiratif.

- Faire des chichis : faire des manières, manquer de simplicité.

- Ne pas être très fute-fute : ne pas être très futé, intelligent.

- à gogo : en abondance.

- un chouchou : le préféré de l’institutrice.

- une nounou : une nourrice.

- le doudou : la peluche ou l’objet préféré d’un enfant.

Quel casse tête pour différencier tous ces mots à la même sonorité ! Heureusement, on peut s’amuser avec les homonymes, comme dans ce texte trouvé sur internet. Attention cependant : ces quelques lignes peuvent aussi vous causer un petit mal de tête !

« Monsieur Lamère a épousé Mademoiselle Lepère.

De ce mariage, est né un fils aux yeux pers.
Monsieur est le père, Madame est la mère.
Les deux font la paire.

Le père, quoique père, est resté Lamère, mais la mère, avant d'être Lamère était Lepère.

Connaissez-vous Léopold Sedar Senghor (1906-2001) ?

Premier Africain à siéger à l’Académie Française et grand humaniste, Léopold Sedar Senghor est aussi le fondateur de la francophonie en 1966 dont il a dit : «La francophonie c’est l’espoir d’une fraternité dans le respect mutuel et le dialogue des cultures ».

Voici donc ce poème très connu, à lire sans modération !

Se fendre la poire : bien rigoler.

Quels sont les noms et prénoms les plus populaires en France ? Les noms de famille ne varient guère et ce sont toujours les mêmes que l’on retrouve en haut de la liste.

Ainsi, sur le podium des patronymes les plus courants, on retrouve Martin, Bernard, Thomas et Petit. Contrairement à ce que l’on peut penser, Durand et Dupont ne se classent respectivement qu’en septième et vingt-deuxième position.

Pour la petite histoire, les noms de famille ont commencé à voir le jour au Moyen Âge, avec trois manières de se différencier les uns des autres :
- le lieu de vie : Jean de la Tour, Jean du chemin, Jean du pont…
- le métier : Jean Barbier, Jean médecin, Jean couturier
- un défaut ou une qualité : Jean le grand, Jean le petit, Jean le bref (le petit)...

C’est ainsi que dans l’histoire de France on retrouve des noms pour le moins insolites comme Jean sans peur, Berthe aux grands pieds, Richard cœur de lion et Jean sans terre.

Les prénoms eux, changent suivant les modes et certaines sonorités sont plus prisées que d’autres. Ainsi, pour les bébés nés en France ces dernières années, voici les tendances.

Pour les filles, le podium de tête revient aux prénoms en « a » avec dans l’ordre à Emma, Léa et Clara, (sans oublier les Lisa, Clélia, Cléa, Julia,…).Les prénoms en « é » ont aussi la cote comme Zoé, Salomé ou Chloé.

Pour les garçons, les prénoms en « o » caracolent en tête du choix des nouveaux parents avec Enzo, Théo, Léo, Hugo et Mattéo qui raflent la palme de la popularité. Les prénoms en « an » et « is » semblent également être très à la mode et les Nathan, Tristan, Mathis, Joris et Yanis peuplent aussi les maternités.

Imaginez le casse-tête des maîtresses d’école qui se retrouvent souvent avec quatre petits Théo et trois petites Emma dans une même classe !

Mais au fait, peut-on donner n’importe quel prénom à son enfant en France ?

-Jusqu'en 1966, une loi du mois germinal an XI (calendrier républicain allant du 21 mars au 19 avril) obligeait les parents à choisir le prénom de leur enfant dans divers calendriers ou parmi les personnages de l'histoire antique.

-Après 1966, on a autorisé tout prénom dont l'usage est consacré, notamment par l'évolution des mœurs. La dernière évolution de la législation en la matière date de 1993.

-L'article 57 du Code civil français stipule qu'on peut donner n'importe quel prénom à son enfant, dans la mesure où il ne porte préjudice ni au droit des tiers ni à l'enfant. M. et Mme Renaud ont dû, dans les années 1990, se battre en justice pour que leur fille Mégane conserve le prénom sous lequel ils l'avaient déclaré à l'État-civil.

Nous avions déjà fait un premier tour des villes et villages de France aux noms un peu bizarres. En voilà d’autres, dont le nom se réduit à une ou deux lettres. Vite dits mais pas forcément plus faciles à prononcer !

- Ay (dans la Marne)
- Eu (en Seine-et-Marne)
- Ri (dans l’Orne)
- Y (dans la Somme)
- Oô (en Haute-Garonne)
- Py (dans les Pyrénées Orientales)
- Fa (dans l’Aude)
- Bû (en Eure-et-Loire)
- Us (dans le Val d’Oise)

C’est donc ainsi que vous pourrez dire en revenant de vacances :
J’ai vraiment bien ri à Ri et beaucoup bu à Bû !

Pour la petite histoire, ce n’est pas parce que le nom de l’endroit est court qu’il en va de même pour le nom de ses habitants. Ainsi, les habitants de Y s’appellent les Ypsiloniens et les habitants de Ri les… Rysopliens ! Comme disent souvent les Français : pourquoi faire simple quand on peut faire compliqué !

Never ever in French!

Our French bloggger, Pascale, shares a couple expressions for saying 'never' in French.

Si jamais « jamais » vous paraît un mot un peu trop définitif en français, voici quelques expressions utiles pour le dire :

- quand les poules auront des dents (l’équivalent français de 'when pigs fly' en anglais).

- à la saint-glinglin (qui n’existe pas sur le calendrier bien sûr !)

- la semaine des quatre jeudis. (comment cela peut-il arriver un jour ?)

- tous les 36 du mois (les mois n’ont jusqu’à preuve du contraire que 31 jours maximum)

- renvoyer quelque chose aux calendes grecques (« calendes » est la traduction de
calendae, le premier jour du mois chez les Romains ? Le calendarium (devenu « calendrier » en français) était un livre de comptes sur lequel étaient reportées les factures dues le premier jour du mois. Ce système n’existait pas chez les Grecs d’où
l’expression pour dire « jamais ».

Vous pouvez aussi dire:

- « tu peux toujours courir » ou « tintin » à quelqu’un qui vous demande de faire quelque chose que vous ne voulez pas, il comprendra alors qu’il devra attendre longtemps !

Battle of the French genders

Sexisme dans la langue française ? Masculin ou féminin ? La guerre des sexes a toujours eu lieu et certains s’amusent même à prendre la langue française à partie ! En voici un exemple trouvé sur le net:

La langue française est parfois bizarre ! UN HOMME ÉCRIT:

"Voici UNE leçon de grammaire amusante : Pourquoi, dès que c'est UNE galère, c'est tout de suite au FÉMININ ? LA pluie, LA neige, LA grêle, LA tempête, tout ça, c'est pour vous les FEMMES!

Nous, les hommes, c'est LE soleil, LE beau temps, LE printemps, LE paradis!

Vous, vous n'avez vraiment pas de chance : LA vaisselle, LA cuisine, LA bouffe, LA poussière, LA saleté, LA balayeuse.

Nous, c'est LE café dans LE fauteuil avec LE journal en écoutant LE hockey et ça pourrait être LE bonheur si vous ne veniez pas semer LA discorde et LA chicane.
Pour retrouver LE calme, je crois que nous devrions laisser LE genre décider.

Vous pouvez regarder LA télé, mais nous choisissons LE poste. Même si LA télécommande vous appartient, nous avons LE contrôle.

D'ailleurs, dès que c'est sérieux, comme par hasard, c'est tout de suite au MASCULIN. On dit UNE rivière, UNE marre d'eau, mais on dit UN fleuve, UN océan. On dit UNE trottinette, mais UN avion à réaction! Et quand il y a UN problème dans UN avion, c'est tout de suite UNE catastrophe.

C'est toujours la faute d'UNE erreur de pilotage, d'UNE panne d'essence, d'UNE mauvaise visibilité, bref, toujours à cause d'UNE connerie.

Et, alors là, attention mesdames, dès que LA connerie est faite par UN homme, ça ne s'appelle plus UNE connerie, ça s'appelle UN impondérable.

Enfin, moi, si j'étais vous les FEMMES, je ferais UNE pétition. Et il faut faire très vite parce que votre situation s'aggrave de jour en jour.

Y'a pas si longtemps, vous aviez LA logique, LA bonne vieille logique FÉMININE. Ça ne nous a pas plu, nous les HOMMES, nous avons inventé LE logiciel.

Mais, vous avez quand même quelquefois des petits avantages: Nous avons LE mariage, LE divorce; vous avez LA pension, LA maison. Vous avez LA carte de crédit, nous avons LE découvert. "

Si vous aviez consulté une femme avant de publier votre fameuse leçon, vous auriez sans doute renoncé à le faire, bien que marrante soit-elle! Mais, quand même, voilà en retour la vraie leçon qui a dû vous échapper :

Pourquoi à chaque fois qu'il y a une réussite, UNE victoire ou UNE gloire, il y a toujours UNE FEMME derrière ?

Mais, quand il y a UN drame, UN malheur, UN vol, UN viol et UN harcèlement sexuel, il y a UN HOMME derrière ?

Et voyons le masculin sur quelques plans :

Côté Météo :
LE mauvais temps, LE nuage, LE vent, L'orage, LE tonnerre, dans tout ça, LA visibilité n'a pas de place et boom, voilà UN accident! Quel drame!

Côté santé :
Quel malheur quand l'humanité a connu : LE cancer, LE SIDA, LE SRAS. Au féminin, ce n'est que LA grippe, LA fatigue, et ça passe!

Côté social:
C'est LE crédit, LE chômage, LE malaise, LE stress, LE crime, LE vol, LE viol, LE suicide, LE terrorisme, et voilà LE massacre ! Ceci a tué LA tranquillité, LA sérénité, LA stabilité, LA paix et LA sécurité !

Côté Amour :
Au masculin : c'est LE cœur en fer, LE coup de foudre, L'abandon et LE chagrin d'amour causé à LA femme ! Au féminin : c'est LA fidélité, LA sincérité, L'honnêteté, LA stabilité, LA vigilance, LA responsabilité et LA veille de LA préservation de LA vie conjugale.

Côté travail :
Au masculin c'est LE retard, LE laisser-aller, LE café, LE prétexte, L'égoïsme et ....! LA femme, c'est LA ponctualité, LA rentabilité, LA responsabilité et LA conscience professionnelle!

LA preuve, c'est que lors d'UNE réunion, on vous donne LA permission d'exprimer votre avis, mais, en conclusion, nous avons LA décision car on a LA bonne vision, LA précision et LA certitude !

Tout cela vous dérange et, en fin de jour, vous attendez impatiemment LA nuit pour vivre LA relaxation et LA détente.

Enfin, cher Monsieur, comme vous l'avez dit dans votre leçon : Nous avons LA logique! Oui, nous l'avons toujours et avec fierté, et, si vous avez inventé LE logiciel, malheureusement vous avez toujours LE virus en parallèle, car vous n'avez pas bien étudié L'affaire!

Pour clore mon message qui n'est autre qu'une réaction au vôtre, cher Monsieur: Si vous, les hommes, désirez avoir un peu de privilèges que nous avons nous les femmes, alors, c'est simple, on vous a accordé un terme pour l'utiliser :

Tout simplement ne dites pas : je suis UN homme..........
Mais, dites plutôt : je suis UNE personne....... »

Quels sont vos mots préférés en français ?

Quand on apprend une langue, on aime certains mots pour leur prononciation, parce qu’on les trouve jolis ou bizarres ou bien encore amusants. Parfois, il arrive même que le mot d’une langue étrangère nous plaise mieux que le mot dans sa langue maternelle. Pour moi, Française, c’est par exemple le mot « kettle » que je préfère à « bouilloire » ou bien encore « puddle » que je préfère à « flaque d’eau ». Il y a aussi l’expression « to treat yourself or to indulge yourself » que je préfère à « se gâter » ou « se faire plaisir ». J’aime la prononciation de ces mots et pour moi, ils représentent mieux l’idée ou l’objet que les mots français.

Dans mon activité d’enseignante, j’ai souvent demandé aux étudiants étrangers quels étaient leurs mots préférés en français et en voici une petite liste :

- Chaussure
- Un petit peu
- Bof !
- C’est la vie !
- Enfin bref !
- C’est chouette !
- Pamplemousse
- Ananas
- Tout de suite
- Petit à petit
- Pantoufle
- Bon appétit
- Nounours
- Concombre
- Tant pis !
- Saucisson
- Cuillère (parce que sa prononciation est quasiment impossible pour un non francophone !)

How many French kisses?

Une, deux, trois ou quatre ?

Rencontrant beaucoup de personnes étrangères de par mon travail, je sais combien il leur est difficile, une fois en France, de s’habituer à certaines coutumes françaises, notamment celle de se faire la bise pour se dire bonjour ! Certains, comme les Japonais ou les Chinois voient vraiment ce geste comme étant trop intime puisqu’au Japon, même les parents et les enfants ne s’embrassent pas ! Quant aux personnes anglophones que je connais, elles ont beau trouver l’habitude charmante et très française, elles estiment souvent que faire la bise est un peu trop intime. Pour nous Français, c’est l’accolade qui est jugée très intime puisque une partie du corps entre en contact avec l’autre personne.

En faisant la bise, le contact reste limité puisque les lèvres ne touchent pas la joue de l’autre personne. Seules les joues se touchent rapidement. Les lèvres, elles, émettent le bruit de la bise, de façon un peu bruyante.

Ce qui est amusant c’est lorsque certains étudiants étrangers, studieux et appliqués, me demandent par quelle joue il faut commencer ! C’est une question que les Français ne se posent jamais. Mais, à bien y réfléchir, ils commencent souvent par la joue droite sauf s’ils sont gauchers ! L’étant moi-même, il m’arrive souvent de tendre la joue gauche en premier et là, gare au petit incident ! Pour être plus sûr, attendez que votre interlocuteur se penche vers vous !

L’autre question récurrente est de savoir combien de bises est-ce que l’on fait. Là ça se complique un peu car tout dépend de la région où vous vous trouvez. Si, dans la plupart des régions, on en fait deux, dans d’autres, on en fait une, trois ou quatre. Trop compliqué ? Mais non ! Voilà un site qui va vous aider puisqu’il référence le nombre de bises par région : Combien de bises.

Voilà, il ne vous reste plus qu’à vous entraîner avant votre prochain séjour en France !

« J’ai un truc à vous dire ! »

S’il y a un mot indispensable à connaître quand on apprend le français c’est bien le mot « truc ». Magique, il peut qualifier n’importe quel objet dont vous ne connaissez pas le mot exact en français. Il peut aussi simplement s’utiliser à la place du mot « chose ».

Exemples :

J’ai pensé à un truc.

C’est quoi ce truc par terre ?

Hier, j’ai mangé un truc vraiment délicieux

Il faut qu’on se parle, j’ai un truc à te dire.

Donnez-moi le truc bleu.

Comment ça marche ce truc ?

Ça sert à quoi ce truc ?

Alors, connaissez-vous un truc aussi utile que ce truc-là ?

How to sound truly French

« 99 Mots et expressions à foutre à la poubelle » ! Voici le titre du dernier livre de Jean-Loup Chiflet. Il est célèbre en France pour ses livres, le plus souvent humoristiques, sur la langue française et la langue anglaise et leurs expressions. Quelles sont donc ces 99 mots et expressions qu’il veut mettre à la poubelle dans son dernier ouvrage ? Il s’agit en fait des expressions qui sont devenues de vrais tics de langage chez les Français.

Voici une petite liste (rappelez-vous, le livre en contient 99 !) de ces expressions à la mode. N’hésitez pas à les employer ! Même si elles sont agaçantes, vous ressemblerez à un Français !

C’est clair ! (= je suis d’accord avec toi, tu as raison)
C’est que du bonheur ! (= c’est formidable, c’est un plaisir)
Il n’y a pas de souci ! (= Il n’y a pas de problème)
C’est génial ! (= remplace tous les adjectifs positifs : intéressant, délicieux, formidable,…)
Quelque part … « quelque part, ça me dérange » « quelque part, c’est bien »
C’est ludique (= c’est amusant)
C’est tendance (= c’est à la mode)
C’est saoulant/ça me saoule (= c’est énervant, ça m’énerve)
C’est énorme (= c’est impressionnant)
Je travaille sur Paris (= Je travaille à Paris)
Et enfin « trop » à la place de « très » : trop bon, trop bien, trop faim, trop content,…

French words 2.010 for language learners

Véritable institution en France, beaucoup de Français en possédant un à la maison, le Petit Larousse est un dictionnaire encyclopédique de la langue française des éditions Larousse. Publié pour la première fois en 1905, il sort une édition chaque année. Celle de 2010 s’est enrichie d’une centaine de nouveaux mots et d’expressions qui reflètent bien notre époque.

En effet, on retrouve beaucoup de mots liés aux technologies nouvelles comme le « peer to peer », le « e-learning » ou l’adresse « IP » ou encore un « e-book ».

D’autres mots anglais comme un « buzz » ou un magazine « people » ou des expressions dérivées de l’anglais comme « être surbooké » pour dire être surchargé de travail ont vu aussi leur apparition dans l’édition de cette année.

Des expressions ont aussi été inventées en français et sont devenues populaires comme « l’empreinte écologique » pour parler de l’impact humain sur l’environnement, ou bien encore un « effet yo-yo » pour parler du fait de perdre et de regagner du poids constamment.

Enfin, des mots valises sont apparus (deux mots assemblés pour n’en faire qu’un) comme le mot « adulescent » venant de « adulte » et « adolescent » et désignant un jeune adulte qui continuent à se comporter comme un adolescent.

Reste à savoir pour combien d’années ces mots et expressions resteront dans le dictionnaire et dans …la bouche des Français.

Pour la petite histoire, le Petit Larousse 2010 c’est 59 000 noms communs, 28 000 noms propres, 150 000 définitions et 5000 photos et dessins : donc un énorme travail !

Peut-être l’avez-vous remarqué si vous êtes en contact avec des Français qu’ils adorent utiliser des abréviations quand ils parlent. Pour aller plus vite ? Parce qu’ils sont paresseux ? Peut-être les deux ?

Le plus court possible !

En tout cas, voici une petite liste des abréviations les plus couramment utilisées.

Le ciné pour le cinéma
Le resto pour le restaurant
L’apéro pour l’apéritif
Un appart’ pour un appartement
Une pub pour une publicité (à ne pas confondre avec un pub !)
La clim pour la climatisation
Un dico pour le dictionnaire
Le petit déj pour le petit déjeuner
Un prof pour un professeur
Des docs pour des documents
La fac pour la faculté, autrement dit l’université
Être sympa pour être sympathique
Une cata pour une catastrophe

Les Français emploient ces expressions tout le temps ! Alors voilà le genre de conversation que vous pouvez entendre :

- On peut aller au resto et après au ciné si tu veux ce soir ?
- Oui pourquoi pas ? Mais avant, on va boire l’apéro chez Nath’ (Nathalie !)
- C’est qui Nath ?
- Une amie de la fac ! Tu vas voir, elle est sympa !
- Salut Manu (Emmanuel) ça va ?
- Oui, mais je suis fatigué, je fais pas mal d’heures sup’ en ce moment et comme je travaille beaucoup sur l’ordi, j’ai un peu mal au dos. Et toi ?
- Moi le travail ça va mais ce qui est pénible, c’est de ne pas avoir la clim dans le bureau par cette chaleur !

Rule 1: Smile!

Many people are surprised by the open, friendly attitudes of Americans when they go to the United States.

In order to enjoy your time in the United States to the fullest, it is important to understand our basic sociological codes of conduct. In the US, it is not uncommon to greet a stranger you pass in the street with a friendly “Hello!” and a warm smile.

When you talk with an American and he or she notices that you are from another country, you can expect them to strike up a conversation with you. They may ask “Is the food in France really as good as they say it is?”, “What’s your favorite region in Germany?” or “What do you most enjoy about the United States so far?”. Be ready to chat about this and that, from current events to food to the weather. This called 'making small talk' and it is something Americans love to do.

Also, pay attention to these simple guidelines:
1) Smile!
2) Speaking loudly does not mean the person is angry - it's just how we do it in America.
3) Give compliments.

And don’t forget to enjoy yourself! The more you relax, the more comfortable you will be. If you have question, just ask.

Fun(ny) French expressions

Des expressions sans queue ni tête !

Le Français, dans ses expressions, n’est pas toujours logique. Il y a même des expressions françaises qui, si on les prend au premier degré, n’ont ni queue ni tête, c'est-à-dire qui ne veulent rien dire.

Par exemple, si vous dormez profondément, on dira en français que « vous dormez sur vos deux oreilles » ! Or, à moins de prouver le contraire, cette expérience paraît vraiment impossible !

Autre chose improbable c’est bien le fait de « prêter une oreille » à quelqu’un. Pourtant c’est ce que fait un Français chaque fois qu’il écoute son interlocuteur avec beaucoup d’attention.

Les Français devraient peut-être réviser leur géographie puisque pour parler du monde entier, on évoque souvent « les quatre coins de la planète » comme si nous avions oublié que la Terre était ronde !

Pourquoi aussi dit-on d’un livre ou d’un film à succès qu’il « fait un tabac » alors que le sujet n’a rien à voir avec la nicotine ?

De quelqu’un qui s’ennuie, on dit qu’il « s’ennuie comme un rat mort ». Or peut-on s’ennuyer en étant mort ?

Les Français peuvent aussi être ironiques puisque d’une personne qui se retrouve sans travail ni argent et sans maison, on dira de lui qu’il « est dans de beaux draps » !

Enfin, comment mettent-ils en pratique leurs expressions ? Par exemple, pour fuir une situation dangereuse ou problématique, les Français disent qu’il faut « prendre ses jambes à son cou »… personnellement, je n’ai jamais essayé, mais ça ne doit pas être très pratique !

American teenager slang

Today we celebrate our 100th post and also welcome our newest blogger, Abigail. She's a 17-year-old American student who has grown up in France. So she's perfectly bilingual as well as bicultural. We've asked her to give some tips for French-speakers on American teenager slang.

Thinking about visiting the US soon? If you do, you may be surprised to hear some of the slang language used by American teenagers nowadays. Here’s a list to help you navigate your way around:

-Sweet: (sucré) Used to show appreciation or amazement by something, can be used instead of “cool”.

-Wicked: (vilain) Used in the same way as ‘sweet’, when something is amazing.

-Dude: (mec) A way of designing one another, can be applied to both sexes, although generally with guys. It is one of the words used most often in this list.

-Awesome: (génial) Also used very often among teenagers, same connotation as ‘sweet’ and ‘wicked’.

-Sick: (malade) When something inspires so much awe there is nothing left to say, the teenager might say ‘sick’. Often used in a negative way. Examples might include talking aboutextreme sports, insects, or in general anything scary or frightening.

-Nasty: (dégueu) Used when talking about something disgusting, mainly in the same contexts as ‘sick’.

-Pumped: (excité(e)) Said when the person is looking forward to something that is going to happen and can’t wait.

So, are you pumped about American slang, dude?

De drôles de noms !

La France est un pays aux régions riches et variées, non seulement dans les paysages et la gastronomie mais aussi dans le nom de ses villes et des villages ! Voici quelques noms aussi amusants qu’insolites.

Certains villages français ont des noms d’animaux comme Saint Jean Pied de Porc dans le sud ouest ou bien encore La Mouche et la Baleine dans le nord ouest.

On trouve aussi des villages avec des noms d’adjectifs comme Joyeux dans l’Ain ou Charmant en Charente.

D’autres villages ont des noms de nourriture comme Camembert dans l’Orne ou La Compote en Savoie.

Quelques-uns ont des noms très bizarres pour un étranger comme Condom dans le Gers ( !) et amusants pour les Francophones comme Ventouse en Charente, Poil dans la Nièvre ou bien encore Ville-sur-Terre (tout un programme !) dans l’Aube.

Enfin, savez-vous quel est le nom du village au nom le plus court ? Il se trouve dans le nord de la France et s’appelle… Y !

Une Américaine en France

En contact par mon travail avec de nombreux étudiants étrangers, je leur ai souvent demandé ce qu’ils pensaient de la langue français, des Français et de la culture française. Voici ce que Susan, une étudiante américaine m’avait écrit. La leçon de grammaire traitant de subjonctif, vous remarquerez qu’elle l’avait bien utilisée !

« J’habite déjà en France depuis quelques mois et voici une petite liste de choses qu’il faut que j’apprenne pour vivre comme un Français. Il faut :

- Que j’apprenne à conduire une voiture manuelle et que j’apprenne à utiliser le klaxon plus souvent.

- Que je développe un goût pour le fromage.

- Que je sache couper la parole à quelqu’un de façon tout à fait naturelle dans une conversation.

- Que je sache changer de queue dans un supermarché et bousculer tout le monde avec un air naturel.

- Que j’apprenne à placer des « euh » « enfin » « bref » « ah là là » « c’est la vie » et « eh ben dis-donc » dans des phrases en français.

- Que j’apprenne la différence entre « au fait » et « en fait » que les Français utilisent tout le temps.

- Que j’accepte que dans la grammaire française, la règle est courte et les exceptions sont longues.

- … ».

J’avais trouvé son texte plein d’humour et reflétant bien quelques-unes des réalités de la France et du français… et vous ? Auriez-vous des choses à rajouter à cette liste ?

La semaine de la langue française

Du 16 au 23 mars, ce sera la semaine de la langue française en relation avec « La journée internationale de la francophonie » le 20 mars. Comme chaque année, c’est l’occasion de fêter la langue française avec toutes ces diversités puisque 200 millions de personnes partagent le français dans le monde ! Des activités seront organisées partout en France, dans les écoles et les médiathèques ou les centres de langues. Vous n’êtes pas en France ? Fêtez quand même la langue française :

- En invitant quelques amis francophiles chez vous et en organisant une soirée française ! Chacun pourrait préparer un plat typiquement français que vous partagerez tous ensemble en parlant français bien sûr ! Et pourquoi ne pas terminer la soirée en regardant un film français …en français ?!

- En participant ; si vous avez entre 18 et 25 ans, au concours des dix mots sur la langue française organisé chaque année. Il s’agit d’écrire un texte de 25 lignes maximum dans lequel figurent 10 mots sélectionnés par la France et l’Organisation International de la Francophonie. - En apprenant de nouvelles chansons françaises. Parmi les chanteurs qui « marchent bien » en ce moment Calogero, M, Grand Corps Malade, Christophe Maé, Renan Luce, Olivia Ruiz, Camille…

Le slam à la conquête de la langue française à l’école !

Né aux États-Unis, le slam est apparu pour la première fois en France à la fin des années 90. Reconnu aujourd’hui comme un véritable mouvement musical et littéraire, il doit beaucoup à un chanteur, Grand Corps Malade, dont le succès a fait connaître le slam au grand public.

Aujourd’hui, plusieurs mouvements se sont créés et animent des ateliers de slam dans les écoles et les lycées. Le but est de donner à chaque enfant ou adolescent la possibilité de s’exprimer en déclamant un texte qu’il a choisi ou qu’il a écrit en donnant peut être aussi l’envie de lire et d’aller plus loin dans l’apprentissage de la langue. La ligue du slam coordonne l’ensemble de ce mouvement en France et elle est soutenue par Grand Corps Malade. Quand on parle de la Francophonie, on pense bien sûr au Québec, cette province du Canada francophone. C’est vrai que les Québécois sont des ardents défenseurs de la langue française. C’est pour ça que là où les Français utilisent des mots anglais, ils utilisent des mots français et ces expressions font sourire les Français.

En voici quelques exemples :

- Une gomme pour « un chewing-gum »
- Un chien chaud pour « un hot dog »
- Faire du pouce pour « faire du stop »
- Magasiner pour « faire du shopping »
- Arrêt pour « stop »

Notons cependant qu’ils font parfois l’inverse et « francise » des mots anglais, ce qui n’a aucun sens en français !

Ex :
- Faire du sens (to make sense) quand les Français disent avoir un sens
- Les heures d’affaires (business hours) quand les Français disent les heures de bureau
- Du change (change) quand les Français disent de la monnaie
- Appliquer pour un travail (to apply) quand les Français disent poser sa candidature

Enfin, remercions aussi les Québécois pour la richesse qu’ils apportent à la langue française car ils ont aussi des mots typiquement québécois.

Ex :
- Une tabagie pour un bureau de tabac
- Les vidanges pour les poubelles
- Une débarbouillette pour un gant de toilette
- Une laveuse pour une machine à laver
- Un maringoin pour un moustique…

À l’occasion de la Saint Valentin, fête des amoureux, savez-vous quels sont les mots doux préférés des Français quand ils s’adressent à l’élu(e) de leur cœur ?

Voici une petite liste, par ordre de préférence, selon un sondage de la Sofres :

- Ma chérie/mon chéri
- Mon cœur
- Bébé, mon bébé
- Ma puce (oui ! oui ! « my little flea » si vous traduisez en anglais. Je sais c’est bizarre mais très affectueux pour un Français !)
- Doudou/loulou
- Chou/Chouchou/petit chou
- Biche/ma biche
- Minou

Viennent ensuite d’autres noms d’animaux que les Français affectionnent en amour comme : mon poussin, mon canard, mon lapin, ma colombe… Ceci n’est bien sûr qu’un échantillon puisqu’en amour, on peut avoir beaucoup d’imagination !

Mais au fait, d’où vient la Saint Valentin ? Plusieurs hypothèses possibles : on en compte en effet une dizaine ! Toutefois, parmi les plus plausibles, il y a l’hypothèse selon laquelle, au Moyen Âge, des observateurs avaient remarqué que la date du 14 février correspondait avec le début de la saison des amours chez….les oiseaux ! Pour les Français, le plus célèbre Valentin est celui représenté dans le jardin public de Valence par Peynet et créé en 1942 par l’artiste. Languages in America

It's probably not breaking news to hear that Spanish is the second most common language in the US, spoken by over 12% of the population. But which languages are most commonly spoken after Spanish? The answer may surprise you.

Chinese speakers, both Cantonese and Mandarin, numbered 2 million at the last Census. The number of French speakers (1.6 million, self included) was followed closely by German speakers (1.4 million) including High Herman and German dialects such as Hutterite German, Texas German, Pennsylvania German and Plautdietsch. Up next is Tagalog, then Vietnamese, Italian, Korean and Russian.

With the upcoming Census, we'll soon see how the languages within the US have shifted and grown. Anyone want to place their bets?

Êtes-vous contre les anglicismes dans la langue française ? La commission générale de terminologie vient de proposer en décembre dernier des mots pour remplacer les mots anglais utilisés dans le domaine d’Internet et de l’informatique. Voici certains de ces mots :

Ne dites plus :

- Spamming mais « arrosage »
- Smartphone mais « ordiphone »
- Webcam mais « cybercaméra »
- Du toner mais « de l’encre en poudre »
- Le home cinema mais le « cinédom »

Ces mots iront rejoindre ceux qui avaient déjà été proposés par cette commission précédemment comme :

- « une frimousse » pour un smiley
- « un bloc notes » pour un blog
- « des mouchards » pour des cookies
- « un mouchard » pour un hacker
- « une causette » pour un chat
- « un minimessage » pour un SMS

Reste à savoir si ces propositions ne resteront que sur le papier ou si les gens finiront par les utiliser… À entendre parler les Français pour l’instant, il semble bien difficile de supprimer les mots anglais !

The eleventh International Mother Language Day, on 21 February 2010, serves to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

We're a month away from this global event, so now is a perfect time to start planning. You can be involved on many levels and in many ways, keeping in mind the goal of promoting linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. You could:

- host a dinner where each guest brings a dish from a different world region.

- learn about music from a region that interests you.

- get together with friends and each person read a poem in a different language. (It doesn't matter how well you speak it or understand it.)

- watch a film in another language or from another culture.

- learn how to greet someone in another language.

- research a language that is nearly extinct, then get involved in saving it. (The best way? Learn it!)

However you choose to celebrate it, have a great International Mother Language Day!

Learning French is easy!

I loved this clip the first time I watched it... and the second time, the fifth and the eleventh. There's a some truth to it though. As we begin learning a language, all we can do is mimic and we have a tendency to cling to the familiar. Then as the lessons sink in, we slowly adopt the phrases as our own, adding a little inflection or hand gesture as we get comfortable.

Being away from family and friends is expecially difficult during the holidays. I know this is true because I've experienced it many times. One particular memory has stuck with me though - a friend who wished me a Merry Christmas in English at a time that I was feeling particularly homesick.

So in an effort to spread the joy around to your friends who aren't native English-speakers, try learning a holiday greeting in their language. I guarantee it will bring a smile to their face... maybe even a little chuckle at your pronunciation. But the sentiment will speak louder than any mispronounced words, so go for it anyway!

Purest language spoken here

Most countries have a place where their language is spoken 'without accent' or where it's spoken clearly. So where is English spoken without accent in the United States? Apparently (and much to my chagrin) speakers from Nebraska and Iowa are accentless. As a Georgian married to an Iowan, I have to admit that little tidbit hurt. But it's true, as my in-laws have pointed out, that national news anchors often sound like they are from Iowa. Also, people in American films and in television also speak like my Iowan family, unless playing a character that specifically needed to have an accent from another part of the US.

General American accent spoken here

What about outside the US? In Spain, where my Iowan sister-in-law currently lives, it's in a place called Valladolid. Her university used to send Spanish students there so they could learn 'clear and correct' Spanish. But if you move across the globe, residents of Bogotá, Colombia, pride themselves saying that it's the purest form of Spanish, due to the supposed lack of intonation when it is spoken.

Back in the 1980s, my parents moved to Tours, France, to learn 'the purest' French. For German with the least dialect influence, go to Northern Germany. And in Florence you will find only the purest Italian (and some fantastic antipasti).

But as one who speaks Southern English proudly, I say a little accent builds character - don't y'all think? So which would you choose: learning a language in its purest form, or spicing it up with a regional accent?

Uh... fill in the gap

Linguistics fillers are, um, specific to a language. So when you're like, learning a new language, you should also learn the appropriate language fillers for casual language. In English we tend to use 'um' or 'uh', even 'like' or 'you know'.

But what about authentic fillers in other languages?

Did you know?
In American Sign Language, 'um' can be signed with open-8 held at chin, palm in, eyebrows down.

The French use the 'euh' filler most commonly, but also 'quoi' (what), 'bah', 'ben' (well), 'tu vois (you see), and 'eh bien' (well...). In other Francophone countries, the fillers change and may include 'tu sais' (you know). In Québec, additional filler words include 'genre' (kind of like), 'comme' (like) and 'style'.

Spanish-speakers call these fillers muletillas. You may hear 'e' or 'este' (this) as well as 'o sea' (I mean). Similarly, in Italian 'e' is used to fill in the gaps.

I don't speak Czech (at all!), but in Prague I picked up on people saying 'tak' often. It's a linguistic filler meaning 'so...'

10 reasons to learn a new language

1. Euh... ta... eh ben... e... you can learn common lingistic fillers in other languages.

2. Impress your friends with your pronunciation of foreign words in everyday conversation, such as marinara, mozzarella and coup d'état.

3. So many choices: the language of romance (Spanish), the language of songs (Hindi), the language of love (French), the language of... whatever you want!

4. Find out what that guy at the kebab shop really said about your hair.

5. Learning languages boosts your brain-power.

6. Get back to your roots by learning a language spoken by your ancestors.

7. Chicks dig cool accents. (And, surprisingly, almost any accent is 'cool'.)

8. Dig deeper in your religion. For example, Christians may be interested in learning Hebrew, Aramaic and Biblical Greek; Muslims could learn Classical Arabic; and both Hindus and Buddhists could be interested in Sanskrit.

9. Self-imposed verifier of online translation tools. Go on - try it. Type a phrase in English, then check the translation using your new language skills.

10. “You live a new life for every language you speak. If you only know one language, you only live once.” Czech proverb (Anyone want to learn Czech?)

Celebrating Thanksgiving outside the US is a very different experience.

Pro: You have a great reason to invite friends and neighbors for an American meal.

Con: Can't find Libby's 100% pumpkin purée, so have to start from scratch with a pumpkin from the market.

Pro: You discover pumpkin pie with fresh pumpkin can be even better than with Libby's.

Con: Being away from family is hard.

Pro: Skype!

Con: Explaining Thanksgiving in another language can be a challenge. (Tip: before attempting to do so, look up the keywords such as Pilgrim, harvest and feast.)

Pro: Even though it's not a French holiday, people still wish you a 'Appee Fanksgiveen!'

Secret language passions

"For years, I'd wished I could speak Italian - a language I find more beautiful than roses - but I could never make the practical justification for studying it. Why not just bone up on French or Russian I'd already studied years ago? Or learn to speak Spanish, the better to help me communicate with millions of my fellow Americans? What would I do with Italian? It's not like I was going to move there. It would be more practical to learn how to play the accordion...

I read these paragraphs sitting on the métro in Lyon, France, and found myself nodding my head in agreement. Right now it would make so much more sense, be so much more logical for me to work on my French or another practical language.

But what I want to do is study Italian.

Sure, I'd love to be fluent - but I'd be happy knowing just enough to have a simple conversation... in beautiful, melodious Italian.

Language taking shape

This weekend I was browsing through posts by some of my favorite bloggers when I came across a linguistic work of art - literally.

19-year-old Sharanya, a student in Mumbai, turned a poem by Yves Bonnefoy into concrete poetry. Calligrammes such as this one are in the style of French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, born in Italy to a Polish mother. The words (or even letters) of the text are arranged to make up a shape - often a shape connected to the subject of the text or poem. In this example,

Sharanya chose Bonnefoy's poem La Lumière du Soir and illustrated it as a hand moving over a half-sun and a half-moon.

Sharanya's representation of the poem made me think about using calligrammes as a language learning tool. What better way to disect a beautiful piece of poetry in another language, then put it back together in a way that is uniquely yours.

I'm thinking of tackling a poem by Léopold Sédar Senghor. What about you?

On November 2nd, France's highest literary honor was bestowed upon French-Senegalese author Marie NDiaye for her book Trois Femmes Puissantes (Three Powerful Women).

First, let's take a rabbit trail on the award - the famous Prix Goncourt.

The award recipient is selected annually by the 10 members of the Académie Goncourt for "the best and most imaginative prose work of the year". Keeping in mind the award is for 'imaginative', guess what the 10 members of this group are called? Les Dix, which means 'the ten'. Isn't that funny? Anyway... The members meet up on the second floor of the Restaurant Drouant in Paris on the first Tuesday of each month (not in summers - this is France, after all) to discuss amongst themselves that year's books. The award is announced in the fall and the recipient receives the prize money: 10 euros.

Surprising, isn't it? The highest literary honor in the country comes with a check worth $14.77 by today's exchange rate. However, the book is guaranteed to zoom to the top of the bestseller list, so that's not half bad. And you might be interested to know that last year's Prix Goncourt winner was Les Bienveillantes (The Kindly Ones) by Jonathan Littell, an American author who writes in French.

Idiomatically yours

Considering the following French idioms and their significantly different English counterparts, it's no surprise that I occasionally get a little lost in conversations with my neighbors and friends here in France. But the fun part is finding the idiom's equivalent in your own language.

For example, my sister-in-law in Spain just had a baby. They were trying to decide who the handsome little guy resembled when an English-speaker made a joke about the mailman. But the Spaniards quickly pointed out that they would have said he resembled the plumber. Interesting, isnt it?

Here are some examples I've come across recently in France.

The French say: Elle a trouvé l'oiseau rare.
It means: She found the rare bird.
I say: She found Mr. Right.

The French say: Mon petit doigt me l'a dit.
It means: My pinky told me.
I say: A little bird told me.

The French say: Ils se ressemblent comme deux gouttes d'eau.
It means: They’re like two drops of water.
I say: They're like two peas in a pod.

The French say: Il est haut comme trois pommes.
It means: He's as tall as three apples.
I say: He's knee-high to a grasshopper.

The French say: Il faut toujours qu'il ramène ses fraises.
It means: He always has to bring his strawberries back.
I say: He always has to put his two cents in.

The French say: J'y perds mon latin.
It means: I lose my Latin there.
I say: I can't make heads or tails of it.

My week's worth of language lessons

I'm getting my week's worth of language lessons as I type this. I'm not in a language class or studying verbs. I'm sitting on the floor watching Le Roi Lion with my neighbor's daughter. You may be familiar with the plot line: A lion cub named Simba learns about the Circle of Life, gets scared away by a jealous uncle named Scar, makes friends with two unlikely characters named Timon and Pumbaa, but hakuna matata, he gets the girl - Nala.

So why are we watching this film in French? Because the little girl sitting next to me is French and she didn't want to watch it in 'that other language'. The French dialogue is great...

Simba: - Bec de banane est terrifié.
Zazu: - MONSIEUR bec de banane.
-- Le roi lion

...but the real language lessons have been in chatting with the small fry (la frite?). There's a whole world of kid-speak in French that I've never learned. Crash course right now! But it's great. She's taught me the names of games like cache cache (hide-n-seek) and un-deux-trois-soleil (red light, green light), that spinach is berk (yucky), and in order to settle in she needs her doudou (security blanket).

Bonus points: Did you know that hakuna matata means 'no troubles' in Swahili, an East African language spoken in Kenya and Tanzania? Simba means lion and rafiki means friend. I'm getting two languages at once out of this deal!

This morning as I was catching up on tweets, I read from a friend:

"I learned this word in German today: Bundesverbraucherschutzministeriums."

It got me thinking about the longest words in various languages, so I started doing a little research.

In English, 'antidisestablishmentarianism' (28 letters) is the longest non-technical word. I can take a good guess at its meaning, but am not likely to use it in conversation any time soon. However, a friend of mine uses the word as a pronunication exercise when teaching English.

The longest French word is 'anticonstitutionellement' (24 letters).Say that one three times quickly! If you can, give these a try - 'anticonstitucionalmente' (23 letters) is one of the longest words in Spanish and 'anticostituzionalmente' (23 letters) is the longest Italian word in common use. But the Portuguese 'inconstitucionalissimamente' (27 letters) beats them all.

German is a whole new kettle of fish because it tends to string words together to form new vocabulary. The longest word is considered to be 'Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän'. It means Danube steamship company captain.

But why break it down when it can be a lovely 41-letter challenge for our friends learning German?

Although I wouldn't recommend her technique for learning languages, I do think it's important to keep an element of humour and fun in the learning process.

There comes a point when verb conjugations and grammar lessons just won't cut it anymore. Try freshening your approach with new material, such as the French Expressions or Authentically French audio learning guides. As you acquire new expressions and learn when and how to use them, you'll also be picking up verb tenses and vocabulary.

Think outside le box.
